President's Report

Incoming President's Message

2020 KC Appraisal Institute President - Alex Hoenig, MAI

Kansas City Appraisal Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to serve as the President of the Kansas City Chapter of the Appraisal Institute for the upcoming year. I am surrounding by a leadership group that is forward thinking and will continue to advance our profession for our existing local professionals in addition to continuing the important mission of recruiting new talent into the local appraisal community.  The 2020 board will include the following:

The current chapter membership continues to be heavily weighted towards certified and designated appraisers and our focus on Continuing Education will continue.  Homegrown education that offers a local perspective for chapter membership will continue to be both a source of quality information, as well as great networking opportunities.   

In 2019 we offered seven hours of homegrown education that were well attended including a Review Panel discussion that was a great way to find common ground among the fee appraisers and reviewer appraisers.  Thank you to Lin Schulze, MAI, AI-GRS and John Daly, MAI, AI-GRS for their insights.   

Qualifying Education, and Continuing Education to a lesser extent, continues be a challenge due to the undeniable convenience of online education options.  I would encourage all members, especially those in the early stages of their careers, to sign up for as much in-classroom education as possible.  Classrooms provide the best opportunities for networking and building relationships that will help your day to day business. The in-classroom instructors also provide the best learning experience that can’t be substituted online.  For 2020, the education committee will be chaired by Andrew Baker, MAI, with Craig Rastorfer, Don Gossman, SRA and Brian McHenry, MAI serving on the committee as well.  More information will follow in early 2020.

In addition, Susan Smith, MAI, AI-GRIS, CCIM and Jill Adams, MAI, AI-GRS are making important inroads in forging a relationship with UMKC and the Lewis White Real Estate Center by sponsoring the their 2020 UMKC Real Estate Symposium.  The long-term goal of this relationship is to provide appraisal education to current college and graduate students which will allow them to enter the workforce with a head start on qualifying education.  Licensed appraisal attendees are eligible for 6 hours of continuing education.


The Communications committee is responsible for the newsletter and website. It is chaired by Tyler Siegworth, MAI and Brian Klahr will serve on the committee as well.  For all job postings, please contact Tyler or Brian for assistance.

Candidate Guidance

For those working on a path to designation you should currently have a candidate advisor and I would encourage you to continue leaning on them.  For local candidate issues, this committee is chaired by Jason Roos, MAI with support from Derek Shaner, MAI.

Nominating Committee

If you have a suggestion for the next round of leaders, this committee is chaired by Immediate Past President Matt Speer, MAI.  The rest of the committee will be filled at our first chapter meeting in the first quarter of 2020.

Member Spotlight

Tyler Siegworth, MAI recently caught up with Evan Mudd, PE.

Where do you work, what do you do, and how long have you been there?

I am an appraiser with Valbridge and have been on staff for about one year.  I work on a variety of property types, but my specialty is in mineral properties.

Tell us about your family.

My family and I love getting outdoors, enjoying local parks, and traveling.  My wife and I have been married for almost 15 years and have four kids who are between the ages of 6 and 12.

Where did you grow up and how did you come to live in the Kansas City area?

I grew up living in suburbs of New York, Washington DC and St. Louis.  After completing college in Rolla, Missouri with a degree in Mining Engineering, I worked for mining companies throughout the Midwest. One company was headquartered in Overland Park, and that engagement initiated our move to the area.

When not working, what hobbies do you enjoy?

Treasure hunting! That could be anything involved with exploring new localities, culture, and learning new skills.  I’m interested in a lot of things and just simply enjoy the adventure giving them all a shot.

Who introduced you to the Appraisal Institute and how long have you been a member?

My introduction to the Appraisal Institute came from a minerals appraiser back in 2014.  We happened to meet at a mining convention and struck up a conversation about the properties he valued in Alaska.  Intrigued, I asked how I could learn more about the field, and he pointed me to the Appraisal Institute as my first stop.

What did you do before your real estate career began?

Without prior knowledge of mining and minerals, I joined my college program with hopes of becoming an explosives engineer, which by the way, they still offer degrees in if a reader of this newsletter happens to be interested in that.  From school, I worked in engineering roles, then went through night school as a business major while working full time at a mining company in Wisconsin. I then transitioned into financial roles within the mining companies, and managed capital projects.  In 2018, I began a consulting business focused on continuous improvement of mining operations, and also joined Valbridge.   

What do you love about real estate, or the appraisal industry?

I enjoy learning, especially about local and regional businesses, and I’m a spreadsheet geek. It’s a great match.   

What is your favorite property type and why?

Special use industrial properties are a mix of something new and interesting, coupled with heavy industry elements I am familiar with from my previous career.  I enjoy diving into those the most.

What is the most unusual thing you have seen/heard on a site inspection?

Actually, I think it was on my way to an inspection, when a tree fell over and totaled my vehicle.  Bizarre.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

My parents were both architects and my family was involved with commercial construction projects when I was at an early age.  I think that was about the only career I knew about or could see myself in until I hit teenage years.  At that point, I’m not sure what I was thinking.

What is your favorite local bar/restaurant?

Burnt Ends BBQ.   

If you could spend a day with being anyone in the world, who would it be and why?

This is hard, there are so many.  I don’t have any one person in mind but it may be something simple like going on a fishing trip in some remote country with Jeremy Wade.  It would be incredible to see a part of the world I have never seen before and spend the day on the water fishing for large, rare, and aggressive fish.

What is your favorite vacation spot and why?

St. Augustine Beach, FL.  I enjoy breaking away from the big city there and being able to take in the history.

How have you benefited from the Appraisal Institute?

For me, AI was the boost I needed to get started in the appraisal industry. I benefited greatly from being able to take online classes in my spare time while working in a different career.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the appraisal profession?

It’s the cry job. You cry through the learning curve. You cry with joy when you get through it.  No matter what, you cry.

In Remembrance:

David William Craig (passed away December 4, 2019)

David William Craig passed away on December 4, 2019.  He was born October 11, 1937, in Odessa, Texas, son of Theodore Craig and Dorothy Davis Craig.  When he was two, the family moved to Peabody, Kansas where he grew up on the family farm. He graduated from Peabody High School in 1955. David attended Kansas State University where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and met his future wife Virginia Caldwell of Kansas City, Missouri. His college years were good years and he made many lasting friends. He graduated in 1960 with a degree in Civil Engineering. David and Virginia were married in 1960 in Kansas City and made their home in Topeka.

David graduated from Washburn University Law School in 1963 and began work with the legal department of the Kansas Highway Commission on condemnation cases throughout Kansas. He met many real estate appraisers while working and became interested in appraising as his next career. David and Virginia founded David Craig & Co., Inc. Real Estate Appraising and Counseling, which at one time had offices in Topeka, Kansas City, Manhattan, Wichita, and Denver.  David appraised properties throughout the United States ranging from agricultural and large commercial projects to the land for the Denver Airport and even a nuclear power plant. He frequently testified as an expert witness for the Justice Department.

David was active in the state and national appraisal communities and loved to teach the profession to others. He taught appraisal courses in over thirty states from the 1970s to the 1990s. He was president of the Topeka Board of Realtors. David served as President of the Kansas Chapter of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers and, in 1985, became the national president. David also served as president of The Appraisal Foundation which was established by Congress to set up standards for state licensing and certification of appraisers. 

In 1999, after several months of illness, he received a heart transplant. David and his family are forever grateful for this gift of life from the donor family and the care provided over the years by the dedicated doctors and staff at St. Luke’s Hospital. David was blessed with 20 extra years with family and friends.

David and Virginia moved to Leawood, Kansas in 2003. He enjoyed connecting with old friends, playing golf, traveling, and working at the Village Church Food Pantry.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Barbara Hodges.  In addition to Virginia, he is survived by his children, Ted and Alice, his sister Susan, his grandchildren, Alex, Sofi, Sam, and Ben, and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

On December 11, 2019 we celebrated the end of the year with the annual holiday party at Milburn Country Club. Good company, food, and drinks were had by all. Kansas City Chapter of the Appraisal Institute Education

The Kansas City Chapter of the Appraisal Institute has implemented a four-year education schedule that will allow members to take all of the required qualifying courses to become certified through the local chapter. In addition to the qualifying education, the required courses to become designated (SRA and MAI) will be offered every four years as well.  The long-term schedule will hopefully help members work with their busy schedules and allocate the appropriate time to further their career goals.  The local chapter is committed to enhancing the skill set of its members in commitment to industry excellence. We are open to any suggestions members might have about future coursework or other educational offerings that would benefit the profession.

Scholarships are available through the Appraisal Institute Education Trust for eligible candidates. For applications and deadlines, visit:
